Frequently asked questions

When should I call 112 instead?

If life, health or property is in immediate danger, always call 112 (or 100 police, 166 ambulance, 199 fire service, 108 coast guard). The numbers on this page are mainly for information, reports and specialised services — not emergencies.

Are the calls free?

It depends on the line: some are free, others cost a local call or follow your provider's rates. 112, 100, 166, 199 and 108 are always free.

Do the numbers work across Greece or only in Thessaloniki?

Short national numbers (e.g. 1056, 15900, 10306) work everywhere in Greece. Numbers starting with 2310/2313 belong to services in Thessaloniki.

Do they speak English?

112 and the Tourist Police (1571) answer in English. Other lines usually have English-speaking staff, but not always — keep a translation app handy.

How up to date is this information?

Numbers and hours were checked on the official websites of each organisation (late July – early August 2026). If something has changed, let us know.

Information comes from the official websites of each organisation (Hellenic Police, EKAV, Fire Service, HEDNO, EYATH and others). Open 24/7 does not replace the official services; in an emergency call 112. · Last checked: 04/08/2026
